"5.1 . . . The sink drain is an open reservoir of pathogens from the patient's faecal and oral flora. When water flows in, bacteria are emitted up to 1.85 m away from the wastewater standing in the siphon . . .

. . . In the case of siphon contamination >105 CFU/ml, the transmission of bacteria to the hands of nursing staff during hand washing has been proven.

Siphons colonised with P. aeruginosa have been identified as a risk factor for the colonisation of patients. . . . "
